FOUNDATION SESSIONS

Section IV: STUDENT MATH OWNERSHIP

If the goal of math class is for students to learn then apply their knowledge, they must be the owners of mathematics. This session focuses on how to transfer ownership from teacher to student, how to empower students to be problem solvers, and how to engage learners in the discovery of math. New Math Minds is known for its energetic and enthusiastic ways to engage the learning brain while making students the owners of their own mathematics and helping them enjoy the journey!

Common sessions include:

  • Increasing Math Talk: Using number talks, number strings, and engaging activities, teachers will learn to seamlessly blend a balance of partner talk into their existing math work.

  • Building Thinking Classrooms: Centered in Peter Liljedahl’s pivotal research, teachers learn to engage students at becoming active math collaborators, communicators, and problem solvers.

  • Small Group Independent Work: A session on differentiation that requires students be in charge of their learning.

  • Exploring Math With a Purpose: Using student-led projects to make the textbook come to life, bringing relevance and excitement to daily math work.

I knew it was going to be a “Jen” math inservice so I couldn’t wait to get here today!
— Samantha, 2nd grade teacher
